Essential to all small towns in the old west, it was a place to meet your neighbors, have meetings, relax with a drink and play games of chance, including dice and cards. They would have used the barman to relay messages to others as a sort of community bulletin board. The saloon would have been one of the first establishments built in a new community, along with the rail station and telegraph office. The inclusion of the honky-tonk piano meant musical entertainment as well, including dancing, singing and theatrical shows.
Saunter into our saloon and belly up to the bar as a cowboy, gambler, or lawman. Drinks are served by the barman or one of the serving girls. Don’t get out of line though, or Madame will show up to put you in your place.
